Ben Davis on social media art – artnet Magazine

Ben Davis on social media art – artnet Magazine.

This is art that toys with social media.  Basically curious because I feel most art that toys with social media has as its perspective the same view as a tourist in a beautiful exotic setting: you just don’t have the whole picture.

A few interesting clips:

“Contemporary art” defines itself as a special sphere, not just different but better than other media phenomena. The problem with this self-image is that the world is ruled by technologies that are more technically sophisticated than anything within reach of the conventional art world — a gulf separates what is taught at the most sophisticated art school from what is taught in the most basic computer engineering class.

In other words, yeah.  Tourist class.
